Signing up for a race That you know you won’t win, or will you?

I’m running Las Vegas with a finish goal of 3:59:59 Is that fast enough to be the first one across the finish line…..no, how about second ?…..no, third….no! fourth….no!!!

Last year I ran Vegas with a finish time of 4:15:43 when finished and in recovery My sisters son (five years old) was sad, I asked him why he was sad and he told me that he seen someone finish first and was sad that I didn’t win The race. I remember I smiled at him and said it’s ok not to be first, however I didn’t tell him I was in about 6,000 place,  at the time I just thought for a second how amazing it would be to be first for a 26.2 run. I know we are all winners, just to be here on this little blue planet we call home and to dream a dream and watch it develop and become real right before our eyes, how lucky we are to do what we all do, what ever it is running, walking, or just being in the moment, how nice it is to be part of this small cycle of Earth’s time and the thing we call life and living.

Here I go for # 6 Marathon back where it all started, Vegas !

First Marathon Vegas Dec 2005,  Second Vegas Dec 2006,  Third San Diego June 2007, Forth Vegas Dec 2007, Fifth San Diego June 2008 and now signed up for Vegas 2008.

Signed up for Las Vegas, booked My flight a few months ago but was waiting to see what Devine racing was doing and all seems good.  I found out on their website the full marathon is being capped at 10,000 I was going to wait and sign up at the expo but didn’t want to chance it.

Can’t fly myself there just yet but soon I will be able to I’m 3/4 the way through flight school (what a blast!!!) I will not drive there anymore from Chula Vista, Ca.  Last Dec on my way to the Marathon,  I was doing a little over the speed limit in a place called Jean Nevada and a Nevada highway patrol wrote me a crazy double citation that costed me 600.00 So flying is a way to go fast and be safe and not worry about getting pulled over by that very nice man (just doing his job) All is well and life is good looking down the barrel of 26.2 will always pump My blood and put a smile on My face just thinking about it I can’t wait to be pushed to the limits of My body, Getting up at 3:00am on a Sunday, freezing, chafing, blistering and loving every second of this great life peak experience, See some of you there.

Getting ready for Las Vegas

September 15th, 2008

Ran at bay

All Goo

Had a good run. Been ill the last few weeks but for now I think I’m getting better. Training for Las Vegas in December.  If it does not happen ( devine racing cancels) I will run anyway same start place, time and day 12/07/08 @6:00am. I will be wearing My nike Human race bib shirt with the numbers and I will plot my route which will be easy because of existing maps and I have ran it three times.  I will check pottie and water stops along the way (Mc d’s, Burger Kings and 711’s)   All I have to do is watch traffic on the strip that seems the most challenging, besides that I will do all My running on the left side of the road. I have a fuel belt for Gu and water for hydration along the streets that have no services and a Nike GPS to track My time and distance, I may even break down and get some beads for My finish metal at The Reo and have a homeless guy meet me at the finish line to give them to me, (yes I will pay him) I will keep you posted…

San Diego 26.2 walk and roll marathon (Tried to rock but could only walk)

randr2008-003.jpgrandr2008-003.jpgUpdate on My 5th journey along this 26.2 path.
My story,
Again I had a blast, but do we ever think we could have done better… YES!!!
Saturday was dinner at a place called Lidos in Lemon Grove Ca. Family was there for My last big meal before the marathon on Sunday. Turnout was great and it was a short notice because I don’t plan anything this day, I pretty much am in slow mode the day before a race and being careful not to stub, twist or hurt Myself in any way (yes I have did all of the above before and I’m glad I heal fast)
Woke up at 3:45am and the first thing I remember thinking was I paid someone a lot of money for this and to be up this early on Sunday with 22,000 others while most of this city still rests so I can push myself to the limits of My body and feel pain and push past it and deal with My body that only wants to rest, am I crazy? Well no.
Arrived at the starting line @ 5:30 had plenty of water. It was a cool morning, partly cloudy.
I found corral #8 and started to get warmed up and then bang we were all off. All went well My GPS had me at 6:32:00 minute miles for 7 miles and I slowed down a bit so not to run out of steam.
At mile 12 I was fresh and strong and my pace was 7:23 wow I was zooming, at mile 13 I was at 1:55:00 and then I approched My longest run for this training 18 miles and all went down from there.
I started to walk at the water stops and then I started to try and justify why I should walk for any other reason and then I knew that I was done. Walk a block or two and then run about half a mile and that’s how I finished at a 4:25:17 chip time.
This thing called a marathon brings something out that I feel is instinctive in all of us, we are fighters!!
Like our beginning in life we start moving then crawl, wobble, walk and then when we get good at it we run and as life changes us and we get older we again can only walk then wobble then are story is over, sounds like a marathon, Yes? I feel we run to live and in this world some of us have lost touch with our instincts to challenge ourselves and to do things that seem impossible to some. Running is a way to invest in ourselves and this is something that can’t ever be taken away from us our accomplishments will always go with us to our last breath.

P.S. If you click on pic you will see a full view of picture, it was late and I could not figure out how to make it smaller or center the pic. This was my first attempt to post a pic and I am still learning….

Motion is Lotion for RA & Arthritis.

Another study on extreme exercise I found in Forbes.com archives….  As for arthritis, “motion is lotion,” according to Dr. Maharam. Other experts agree: A study in last month’s Current Opinion in Rheumatology found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis benefit from long-term moderate or high-intensity exercises. “Moderate or high-intensity exercises were found to improve aerobic capacity, muscle strength, functional ability, and psychological well-being, and slow the age-related and sex-related decrease in bone mineral density of the hip,” the study reads.

Great, however there is no mention of the breaking down of your immune system which is what happens to all of us marathon runners towards the taper part of training, and that breakdown is the same effect that a person with RA needs to keep RA in check, does no one see the correlation in this….maybe ?

I remember the pain, However I didn’t know at the time the pain was training Me to do 26.2

What does rheumatoid arthritis do to my body?

The word “arthritis” refers to several diseases that occur inside the joints between bones. The main symptom of all types of arthritis is pain in the joints, especially with movement. This pain can limit movement, making life difficult. It is important to know the difference between types of arthritis, because they are treated differently and have different long-term effects.

Rheumatoid arthritis causes swelling and inflammation of specific tissues (synovium) found in the joints. The synovial tissues are responsible for producing the synovial fluid needed for normal joint function. In rheumatoid arthritis, the synovial tissues inside the joint are damaged when they are attacked by the body’s own immune system.

The immune system is made up of specialized cells that act as a surveillance and defense system against foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. Normally the immune system has a series of checks and balances that allow it to identify foreign substances and to keep them from attacking the body’s tissue. For unknown reasons, occasionally the immune system will begin attacking the body’s own tissues. Any disease in which the immune system attacks the body is called an autoimmune disease. When the tissue attacked is the joints, the result is rheumatoid arthritis.

When cells of the immune system attack your joint tissues, you feel pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joint. Over time as your body attempts to repair the damage caused by the attack, your joints become distorted and nonfunctional, and movement is increasingly difficult. The activation of the immune system releases chemicals into the bloodstream that are used as messengers to coordinate the activities of widely distributed cells, and these chemicals can cause symptoms of tiredness and fever.

The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, and there is no known way to prevent the disease.

When I found this article on the web I rembered when I was hurting. and now still hurting but from a 20:40 5K  and #5 marathon training… We should never give up !!! If we do we fail, and We may never know why the challenges happen in all of our lives, but be strong and maybe the challenges in our lives are training for greater things like running Marathons when I couldn’t even get off a toilet seat without a hand rail. I NEVER GAVE UP !!! AND HERE I AM.
