Marathon training

Back in the am workout again. Running at night gets me to bed at 11:00pm and then the am workout gets me up at 4:15am.  I trained my body to recover from long runs and now in a few weeks I get to see what all this time and effort has done to my body. Running alone for 14, 15, 18, 20 miles or any long run really clears a persons mind, the only thing that can be going on in your mind at that point is finishing the run. Running alone for 99% of this marathon training and only the drive of one to keep me going an now in a few weeks I meet with people from everywhere to run as one again, but with the power in numbers and one goal in everyones mind We all will run to together as one, how lucky am I to have discovered this thing called a marathon and crazy enough to try and meet the challenge of 26.2

Las Vegas Marathon Joins Rock and Roll for 2009..2008 is on !!

The financially troubled owner of the Las Vegas Marathon has agreed to a partnership designed to finally put the event on terra firma for this year’s Dec. 7 race and beyond.

Devine Racing, which in the past year has struggled to meet financial obligations with its top two events in the Los Angeles Marathon and the Las Vegas Marathon, has brought on the Competitor Group Inc. as a partner for the Las Vegas Marathon.

The multimillion-dollar sale of the L.A. race last month, to a group headed by Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, still wasn’t enough to get the Las Vegas event back on solid ground.

So Devine Racing chairman Chris Devine realized it was time to face the music, by partnering with the San Diego-based company that owns and operates the highly successful Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathons.

With that, the Las Vegas Marathon has assured itself long-term stability with a company that operates 20 events across the country, including 11 large events, that draw 250,000 competitors annually. Beginning in 2009, it will be called the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon.

Lose fat & you could win some of the battle with RA

THURSDAY, Oct. 2 (HealthDay News) — How fat and muscle are distributed throughout the body is one of the factors that contribute to limited mobility of people rheumatoid arthritis, a new study finds. However, since one’s body composition can be altered, there is hope to reduce the amount of disability and improve the quality of life of these patients. The study, led by researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, was published in the October issue of Arthritis Care & Research. The results, based on analysis of almost 200 people with rheumatoid arthritis, found that those with increasing amounts of fat and decreasing amounts of lean mass (skeletal muscle) on the arms and legs had the most increasing disability linked with the highly inflammatory disease of the joints. The authors theorized that increasing fat may affect the normal range of motion of the arms and legs or that the fat may biochemically interfere with muscular function, but they said the most likely reason is that the fat may be infiltrating the muscles, reducing muscle quality.

“Interestingly, in studies of the general population, increasing fat mass has also been more strongly linked to worsening functional capacity than decreasing lean mass, suggesting that efforts to improve physical function require a focus on fat reduction with at least as much emphasis, if not more, than increasing lean mass,” the authors wrote.

“In the absence of interventional trials, these findings suggest that practitioners should encourage muscle strengthening and fat loss in their patients with RA as a method of reducing disability,” they concluded. Another good posting I found on the web

What doesn’t kill us can only make us stronger.

Mental  Inoculation, one thing at a time. I have had some challenges in my personal life and in addition to that, last week a very good friend of mine found her 3 year old niece floating in her pool. Under the care of a live in babysitter during the incident, I put who was watching her but it really matters not, tragic yes, blame? Over this weekend I was told the little girl had passed away. As a parent of 2 kids, 7 and 13 I can’t attempt to follow how the family must feel. I feel life is like a marathon and this weekend I hit the wall, not knowing how to deal with this I used all my marathon training mental tools to get through this hard time. It’s one step at a time and for now I feel ok, why I kept moving forward was 100% marathon training and I hope I never hit a wall again, But I know I will and this mental inoculation will help me cope with life’s challenges all the better.
